Tie a square knot

Two different-color shoelaces; a small box.

Ages 6–8: Hold a lace and name which end crosses.

  1. 1Lay the laces around the box. Cross right over left and tuck underneath.
  2. 2Cross the end now on the left over the end on the right; tuck underneath.
  3. 3Pull all four strands gently. Both loose ends should sit beside their own standing parts.
  4. Show Dad: Untie it and teach Dad the two crossings.

On FaceTime they need the laces at their end. Pick your time, how you’re connecting, and what they’re into; the suggestion changes to fit.
